Atouba heading for Hamburg

The Cameroonian midfielder Thimothée Atouba has joined German UEFA Intertoto Cup hopefuls Hamburger SV.

Intertoto Cup date
The 23-year-old defender has penned a four-year deal with the Bundesliga outfit, although he is unlikely to feature against Portuguese side UD Leiria in the UEFA Intertoto Cup second round this weekend.

'Top candidate'
"Thimothée was definitely the top candidate for our defence. We are very glad we could finally tie up this transfer," said Hamburg sporting director Dietmar Beiersdorfer. Before joining his new team-mates at their training camp in Austria, Atouba added: "Hamburg are a big club. I am looking forward to playing in the Bundesliga."

Mixed spell
The move ends a mixed spell in England for Atouba, who was edged out of the Tottenham reckoning after beginning last season in the starting lineup. In all, he made 18 appearances following his switch from FC Basel 1893 last August.
