Sterling start in Almaty

FC Kairat Almaty 2-0 FC Artmedia Bratislava A home win gives the Kazakhstani outfit a fine tournament debut.

Kazakhstani champions FC Kairat Almaty made a wonderful start to their first UEFA Champions League campaign by recording a comfortable 2-0 victory at home against fellow newcomers FC Artmedia Bratislava in the first leg of their first qualifying round encounter.

Celtic next
Goals from Arturas Fomenko and Vitaliy Artemov put Kairat Almaty in a strong position ahead of next week's second leg, with Scottish Cup holders and 1967 European Champion Clubs' Cup winners Celtic FC awaiting the aggregate victors in the second round.

Uphill task
The Kazakh side took the lead six minutes before half-time in Almaty when 28-year-old forward Fomenko found the net. Defender Artemov doubled the advantage on 70 minutes to leave Artmedia, who qualified as Slovakian champions, with an uphill task in Senec next Wednesday.
