Briand fires France to victory

France 3-0 F.Y.R. Macedonia Two second-half goals from Jimmy Briand boost French before Tuesday's qualifier in the Republic of Ireland.

France 3-0 F.Y.R. Macedonia
Two second-half goals from Jimmy Briand helped France boost their confidence before next Tuesday's UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifier in the Republic of Ireland.

Le Tallec opener
René Girard's team broke the deadlock when Sunderland AFC forward Anthony Le Tallec scored in the 24th minute. Despite making several changes at the break, his team remained on top and Stade Rennais FC striker Briand put the seal on a good team display in Epernay with efforts in the 63rd and 68th minutes.

Four-point gap
France are second in qualifying Group 4, four points behind Israel but with two games in hand. However, before France's trip to Cork next week, Israel could extend their lead further when they travel to Switzerland tonight. The Swiss are two points behind France, having played one game less.
