Scotland pay price for error

UEFA has awarded Italy a 3-0 default victory over Scotland after the home side fielded an ineligible player last Friday.

Full game
Scotland's Steven Whittaker played the full 90 minutes at Fir Park, only for the Scottish Football Association (SFA) to realise afterwards that he was serving a suspension for two yellow cards received earlier in the competition. The SFA had been notified about the player's suspension following the match against Belarus on 7 June.

'No malice'
UEFA said "there is no bad intention or malice displayed from neither the player nor his association", but "the association is responsible for the control and disciplinary situation of their players". Whittaker is therefore suspended for tonight's game against Norway.

Apology
The SFA has launched an investigation, headed by chief executive David Taylor, and said in a statement: "The Scottish FA is apologising to UEFA and the Italian Football Federation for this rules infringement, as well as to the player and his club."

Suspensions
Meanwhile, two of three players dismissed in that game, Scotland goalkeeper David Marshall and Marco Motta of Italy, both saw one-match bans stand. The pair were sent off following a clash in the 77th minute which UEFA deemed "absolutely unacceptable", adding: "Such behaviour is a contravention of UEFA regulations of fair play principles."
