We didn't get the result that we expected. In the first half we should have scored at least twice, but we relaxed too much in the second and allowed Schalke to come back at us. We only started to play as a team once we had fallen behind. Volkan's mistake gifted them a 3-2 lead but we deserved to draw and it was a superb goal from Appiah that gave us a point. Schalke have a slight advantage over us now as they will be at home next time and we will be without Alex after his sending-off. He provides us with qualities that no other player in the team has and his absence means we will have to change our tactics for the next match.
Ralf Rangnick, Schalke coach
We came here to get three points and if you look back over the course of the game, I feel that we deserved them. Twice we led but both times we were pegged back. I am not happy with the result but I am happy with the commitment shown by my players. We now have two home games coming up and the situation is simple - we must win both of them to have a chance of qualifying. In the end, I cannot fault my team tonight. This is a difficult place to come to, the crowd are intimidating and it is hard to keep your concentration with such passionate home support.
Volkan Demirel, Fenerbahçe goalkeeper
I felt so bad after my mistake but thankfully Appiah rescued things for us. I normally come out and deal with those balls easily, but the wet pitch made me feel like I was slipping over. Thankfully we earned a point in the end.
