Adriaanse lifted by Porto turnaround

Porto FC coach Co Adriansee proclaimed his side "masters of their own destiny" after an impressive win against FC Internazionale Milano.

FC Porto coach Co Adriaanse was relieved that his side have their Group H destiny back in their own hands after they put their poor start to the UEFA Champions League campaign behind them with a 2-0 win against FC Internazionale Milano. Porto's goals owed something to fortune as Marco Materazzi scored an own goal for the opener while the second came from a Benni McCarthy shot that took a heavy deflection off Juan Sebastián Verón. Inter also spurned a series of chances, with Luís Figo – returning to his homeland - coming closest as he headed against the post in the second half.

Co Adriaanse, Porto coach
We won but it was not great. Inter created four good goal chances but in the second half we had more space, more chances and could have scored more too. We made some mistakes - everyone does - and there's no such thing as perfect games. Inter normally play with two strikers in Serie A and the UEFA Champions League, but this time they played with Julio Cruz on his own up front, supported by David Pizarro, but still they caused us trouble. We had to win this game, but against Italian opposition we needed to defend well and attack even better - which we did - because they also defend well and are very dangerous on the counterattack. Now our destiny is in our hands again because we have three points and Rangers [FC] and [FC] Artmedia have four each. So everything is open now.

Roberto Mancini, Inter coach
Porto have a good team but this was a strange game, effectively decided by two own goals. When things go that way, you realise that this was one of those games when it's already been decided that you will lose. Porto are a very attacking side so we played five midfielders and Cruz in attack. At the beginning, things were going well but with two own goals in five minutes the game was decided. I'm disappointed with the result but we had a good game and we created chances but those two own goals ended our hopes. We expected to have more points than we do going into our next game. We need to get four more points from our next three games to qualify for the next stage.
