United's finishing frustrates Ferguson

Manchester United FC's Sir Alex Ferguson rued several missed chances but praised a "controlled performance" by Villarreal CF in securing a draw at Old Trafford.

Sir Alex Ferguson, Manchester United manager
Villarreal proved their worth. The strength of their team is that they are very controlled. We were a bit unlucky during the match. We need to win now against Benfica but now all the teams in the group will be going for a win. We deserved to win. Some of our attacking play was very good - when we counterattacked in the second half there was some of that typical Manchester United abandonment. Some of our young players did not have the patience. We brought [Louis] Saha on and he looked athletic and fit. Sometimes to win games you have to take a gamble like that. I think the game against Benfica will be an open match, they have a fantastic stadium which always helps. The Champions League winners in the last two years have been big surprises. I think Lyon can win it this year.

Manuel Luis Pellegrini, Villarreal coach
In the first half, Manchester United played very well but gradually we got into the game, and I think by the second half we deserved to draw. Nothing really changed in the group after tonight's results, we still have to go for a win to win the group. When the draw was made for this group a lot of people thought it would be three teams playing for two places. I never thought that; I thought it would be four teams playing for two places. I like to think I've been proven right. Given the attacking possibilities they had, it is surprising they didn't score. We haven't scored many goals, but there haven't been many goals in the group. The group is very tight and it is difficult situation for everyone.
