Final eleven to be selected

Eleven of the 16 UEFA European Under-21 Championship play-off berths remain to be filled with Italy, Denmark, Portugal, England and Germany already there.

Group 1
The Czech Republic are a point clear of the Netherlands, with Romania a further point adrift with one rather than two games left. The Dutch visit the Czechs on Friday, the hosts knowing victory will secure a play-off place, while Romania go to Finland. If Romania lose, the current top two will progress, but even if they win, victories three days later for the Czechs in Finland and the Netherlands at home to F.Y.R. Macedonia will ensure they go through.

Group 2
Denmark are guaranteed first position. Greece are fourth, but within three points of Ukraine and one of Turkey, and have a game in hand. On Friday, Ukraine will seal second spot if they defeat Albania and Greece do not win in Denmark. However, if Ukraine fail to win, Turkey can overtake them, at least on head-to-head, with a victory in Albania on Tuesday. Greece have a superior head-to-head record to Turkey's, but if all three contenders finish level Ukraine have the edge.

Group 3
Portugal's 1-0 triumph in Russia last month kept up their perfect record and sealed pole position. In the race for second, Slovakia are three points behind Russia. If Russia get a better result against Luxembourg on Friday than Slovakia manage against Estonia, the Russians finish second. Otherwise, Slovakia could overtake Russia with victory in Wednesday's only U21 game.

Group 4
Leaders Israel have completed their fixtures, but all other sides have two matches remaining. France are two points behind and the Swiss three, so if France win in Switzerland on Friday, they clinch the group. Whatever the outcome, home victories four days later for France against Cyprus and Switzerland versus Ireland would give the pair play-off berths.

Group 5
Italy's 1-1 draw in Belarus took the title-holders through and also secured first place as Norway lost to Scotland. Slovenia won in Moldova to go second, a point above Norway, two clear of Belarus and four ahead of Moldova. On Friday, Slovenia go to Claudio Gentile's Italy, Belarus to Scotland and Norway to Moldova. Slovenia will hope still to be second when Scotland visit four days later, when Belarus welcome Norway.

Group 6
Germany and England were already through when they drew 1-1 in Mainz. Level on points, Germany have the head-to-head advantage on away goals. Therefore victories at home to Wales and in Austria will give them first place; otherwise England could move ahead with home wins against Austria and Poland.

Group 7
Belgium are top, with Spain and Serbia and Montenegro one and two points behind respectively. On Friday, Belgium can reach the play-offs with a home win against Spain, while if Serbia and Montenegro prevail in Lithuania and then overcome Bosnia-Herzegovina on Tuesday they will definitely finish in the top two.

Group 8
Croatia are three points clear of Sweden, who are the same distance ahead of Hungary. Croatia will not just go through, but clinch top spot if they get a point at home to Sweden on Friday, while Hungary must win in Bulgaria should Sweden avoid defeat. Indeed, Sweden would be through with victory due to superiority in all the head-to-heads. Croatia travel to Hungary on Tuesday, with Sweden playing Iceland.
