Kompany takes surprising course

RSC Anderlecht's teenage defender Vincent Kompany has surprised many in Belgian football by signing up to study economics at university in Brussels.

Personal tutor
The 19-year-old, who was voted his country's Player of the Year last season by his fellow professionals, will start the course at the Vrije Universiteit (Free University) in the Belgian capital this autumn. He will not be able to attend all of his classes, but a personal tutor will be on hand to help him do academic work alongside training for Anderlecht.

No privileges
"He will not get any privileges," said Kompany's agent Jacques Lichtenstein. "He will have to do the same course and the same exams as everyone else. He will only get the opportunity to do the exams at the times that fit into the Anderlecht schedule. From year to year we will continue to monitor the situation."

Back trouble
The long-legged centre-back has impressed ever since making his debut in a UEFA Cup qualifying match against AFC Rapid Bucuresti in July 2003. He is currently sidelined with back problems, with tests set to decide whether he will play in Anderlecht's UEFA Champions League tie against Real Betis Balompié next week.
