Hungry Magath wants it all

After winning a German double last season, FC Bayern München coach Felix Magath has his eyes on an improbable treble in 2005/06.

FC Bayern München coach Felix Magath won three Bundesliga titles, a German Cup and a European Champion Clubs' Cup as a member of an awesome Hamburger SV squad in the 1980s. Now he wants to win all of those trophies again in one season as coach of Bayern.

'Even better'
The 52-year-old won a domestic double last season in his first season at the club - and their final season at the Olympiastadion. Now he wants to go one better. "It is my job to strive for the best results," he told uefa.com. "We won the title and the Cup last season and this time we want to do even better."

Consistent improvement
Bayern reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League last season only to bow out after a thrilling tie against Chelsea FC. It was a harsh defeat but not one that has disheartened the coach. "We were very unlucky to be knocked out by Chelsea and I am absolutely sure we could have reached the final," he said. "We improved continuously as the season went on and I hope we can do the same this season."

Glorious start
Bayern started the 2005/06 campaign with five straight Bundesliga victories and opened their European account with a 1-0 win in a tricky tie at SK Rapid Wien. And while their 2-0 defeat against Hamburger SV on Saturday ended a run of 15 straight wins in the league, they will be out to bounce back immediately against Club Brugge KV on Tuesday.

New stadium
It will be their first Champions League game at their new home, the München stadium, a venue which Magath feels has given his side a real boost. "We have finally got a pure football stadium," he said. "I am sure our opponents in the Champions League will find the atmosphere quite intimidating."

Summer signings
Even more so when you consider that Bayern have won all their games in their new home. And that, perhaps, is down to further squad strengthening in the summer that saw Philipp Lahm, Ali Karimi and Valérien Ismael make a bee-line for Munich.

Youth concerns
However, despite all of that transfer activity, Magath maintains he is not about to neglect the fantastic converyor-belt of talent that is Bayern's youth and reserve programme - a system that brought the likes of Bastian Schweinsteiger and Owen Hargreaves into the first XI.

Latest additions
"Andreas Ottl has been handed a professional contract and maybe he will be the next player to make an impact," said Magath. "It is more difficult for young players to find a place in the team because of the quality of the squad but Schweinsteiger and Paolo Guerrero have proved that it is possible in recent seasons."
