Betis too good for Zimbru

FC Zimbru Chisinau 0-2 Real Betis Balompié Moldovans come unstuck against superior Betis.

FC Zimbru Chisinau 0-2 Real Betis Balompié
Moldovan side FC Zimbru Chisinau were well beaten by Real Betis Balompie tonight in their home leg of the UEFA Cup first round.

Perez silences support
Despite enjoying the support of a packed Republican stadium, Zimbru could only contain a talented Betis side until the half-hour mark. Up until then the hosts enjoyed a good spell of pressure, but when Alfronso Perez latched on to a Joaquin Sanchez pass to beat goalkeeper Emanuel Multescu with a well-placed shot, the whole complexion of the tie changed.

Betis take control
Betis took control of the game from that point and extended their lead when Zimbru defender Viorel Dinu deflected the ball into his own net from a corner. The Spaniards continued to dominate throughout the second period but failed to turn their superior possession into any further clear-cut chances.

First goal changed game
"We were looking to win posession early in the game," said Betis coach Victor Fernandez. "I have to say that Zimbru looked good at the start. But after we scored, we relaxed a little bit, which was good for us. I think we have taken a big step towards overall victory today."

Stan finds consolation
Zimbru coach Gabi Stan, said: "It was hard for us to play against such tough opposition. We were aware of their ability at set-pieces, and we did concede a goal from the corner. The only thing that consolates me is that we lost to Betis by the same margin as Deportivo recently - we will try to do our best in Spain."
