Nesta surgery leaves Milan short

AC Milan defender Alessandro Nesta faces a month on the sidelines after undergoing surgery to repair a damaged tendon in his left hand.

Missing for Moldova
Nesta suffered the injury playing for Italy against Slovenia on Saturday, and the first game he will miss is the Azzurri's final FIFA World Cup qualifier against Moldova on Wednesday. Italy have already booked their place in Germany as Group 5 winners.

Champions League worry
Of greater concern to Milan, however, is the fact the 29-year-old centre-back will be unavailable for two UEFA Champions League Matchdays. Milan, the Group E leaders, are due to host PSV Eindhoven on 19 October in a repeat of last season's semi-final, before the return fixture in the Netherlands on 1 November.
