Coleman calls it quits

Fulham FC and Wales defender Chris Coleman has been forced to retire from football through injury.

Fulham FC and Wales defender Chris Coleman has been forced to admit defeat in his 21-month fitness battle and has announced his retirement.

Car accident
The 32-year-old broke his right leg in a January 2001 car accident. He underwent extensive physiotherapy in a bid to return to playing but was suffering trouble with his ankle and knee. Coleman did make a return to reserve football in March but has conceded he could not continue as a professional footballer.

Coaching role
Coleman is to stay in football after being offered a coaching role by manager Jean Tigana. "It really is fantastic that I have been given the opportunity to stay at Fulham Football Club in this new role," Coleman said. "I have a great affection for the club and the fans and I have always wanted to be able to show my appreciation and gratitude for the support they have shown me."

European hope
Fulham are in UEFA Cup first-round action tomorrow night against HNK Hadjuk Split. Tigana's side have a 1-0 lead from the away leg a fortnight ago.
