Ronaldo rewarded for United form

Manchester United FC winger Cristiano Ronaldo has signed a two-year contract extension that will keep the Portuguese international at Old Trafford until 2010.

'Fantastic player'
United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said the club had been working for the past six months to secure the 20-year-old Portuguese international on a long-term deal. "This demonstrates our faith in young players and we're delighted to have secured his signature," Sir Alex said. "He's going to develop into a fantastic player."

Work to do
The Madeira-born Ronaldo joined United for €17.5m from Sporting Clube de Portugal in August 2003. Having put pen to paper, he will now hope to help United reach the UEFA Champions League knockout phase, starting with Tuesday's visit of Villarreal CF. Ronaldo said: "I am very happy and proud. I want to be an integral part of the team that achieves trophies for the club."
