Hughes reward for Welsh revival

Wales coach Mark Hughes is poised to become the best-paid manager in his country's history.

'Deal imminent'
Former Manchester United FC striker Hughes is expected to sign a new contract - worth a reported €280,000 per year - ahead of the EURO 2004™ qualifier with Italy in Cardiff on 16 October. "The deal is imminent," said an FAW spokesman.

Welsh revival
Hughes has masterminded a dramatic turnaround in his country's soccer fortunes. Wales are on a six-match unbeaten run - which includes the 2-0 Group 9 victory in Finland last month.

Part-timer
The FAW international committee has been negotiating with the 38-year-old for months in a bid to switch his current part-time arrangement to a full-time situation.

Pen to paper
And the ex-FC Barcelona, FC Bayern München and Chelsea FC forward, capped 72 times by Wales, is now poised to put pen to paper. FAW president Des Shanklin said: "There was never any doubt in my mind that we would re-negotiate Mark Hughes' contract."
