Schachner out as Daum steps in

FK Austria Wien have appointed Christoph Daum as coach in place of Walter Schachner.

FK Austria Wien have appointed Christoph Daum as their new coach in place of Walter Schachner.

Brief statement
The former FC Köln, VfB Stuttgart and Bayer 04 Leverkusen coach, who was briefly in line to become coach of the German national team, was announced as Wien's new coach in a brief statement on the club's official website.

Schachner suspended
Schachner had been suspended from his position as coach a few hours earlier. Wien lost 1-0 at FC Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday but earned a place in the second round of the UEFA Cup after an emphatic 5-1 win in the first leg.

Sturm rumours
The 48-year-old Daum was in attendance at the game on Tuesday and has been announced as the new coach of the Austrian Bundesliga leaders with immediate effect, finally scotching rumours that he was set to replace Ivica Osim as coach of another Austrian side, SK Sturm Graz.

Turkish experience
Daum last worked as coach of Turkish side Besiktas JK but stepped down after a second spell at the Istanbul club in May 2002. The coach had once been lined up to replace Rudi Völler as coach of Germany, but a positive drugs test for cocaine while managing Leverkusen saw him dismissed by the club and his country.
