Article body
Founding father
Philips, who died in his sleep at the age of 100 on Monday night, was the son of Dr Anton Philips - the man who founded Philips Sport Vereniging, later shortened to PSV Eindhoven. Head of the Philips company until 1977, he witnessed all 18 of the club's Dutch championship successes.
First kick
Perhaps the last surviving link with the clubs roots, as a five-year-old Philips kicked off the first game of the newly-founded Philips Elftal on 15 January 1911 at the Frederiklaan in Eindhoven, where the Philips Stadion now stands. The team were the forerunners of the current PSV side.
Symbolic gesture
Philips was also present at the official founding of PSV on 31 August 1913. In the intervening 92 years he remained committed to the club and in April this year he was handed the Eredivisie championship plate by Mark van Bommel as a mark of the esteem he was held in.
