Rangers FC have awarded a new contract to defender Steven Smith, who made his UEFA Champions League debut against Villarreal CF last week.

Rangers FC have awarded a new contract to defender Steven Smith, who made his UEFA Champions League debut in last week's first knockout round tie against Villarreal CF.

Show of faith
The 20-year-old homegrown player has signed a deal to keep him at Ibrox until 2008. "I owe a lot to the manager, Alex McLeish, because he has shown a lot by playing me in the Scottish Premier League and then in the Champions League," said Smith, whose previous contract was due to expire this summer. The left-back played the full 90 minutes of Rangers' 2-2 first-leg draw against Villarreal. He has also made nine league appearances this season to add to three in 2004/05.
