Germany support flood victims

Germany will play a fund-raising match against a selection of non-German 1. Bundesliga players in December.

FIFA World Cup runners-up Germany will play against a selection of non-German 1. Bundesliga players in a charity match for the victims of the floods that devastated the country during the summer.

Generous response
The match will be played on 16 December in Gelsenkirchen, at FC Schalke 04's Parkstadion. Rudi Völler's team donated €500,000 in the immediate aftermath of the flooding, which struck eastern Germany in August.

DFB pledge
They were not the only ones and among the donations from the German football community, the German Football Association (DFB) pledged €1.5m towards reconstruction work, and FC Bayern München players donated €100,000 each.

Next test
Germany's next competitive match is the EURO 2004™ qualifier at home to Lithuania on 29 March next year. They presently lead qualifying Group 5 after wins against Lithuania and the Faroe Islands.
