Plenty to do for Parma and Lazio

Parma AC and S.S. Lazio both won narrowly in the UEFA Cup on Thursday and neither can be certain of progress.

Italian sides Parma AC and S.S. Lazio enjoyed wins in the UEFA Cup second round last night but neither can be certain of progress just yet.

Mutu saves Parma
Parma, twice winners of the competition, owed their 2-1 first-leg victory at home to Poland's Wisla Kraków to Romanian forward Adrian Mutu's winner 16 minutes from time. Maciej Zurawski had cancelled out Massimo Donati's early goal and the away goal could yet prove decisive.

'Very good chance'
Lazio were made to work hard by former European champions FK Crvena Zvezda, but edged a 1-0 win in Rome. The Serie A side scored the only goal eleven minutes in through Stefano Fiore, but spent much of the rest of the match under pressure, leaving Zvezda coach Zoran Filipovic warning about the second leg in two weeks' time: "We will have a very good chance playing in front of a full house."

Historic tie
Elsewhere, Panathinaikos FC secured a 1-1 draw at Fenerbahçe SK in the first meeting in European club competition between Turkish and Greek clubs. Angelos Basinas gave the away team an early lead, but Stecanela Washington equalised before half-time and visiting goalkeeper Antonios Nikopolidis had to make several important saves to ensure his team would not take a deficit back to Athens.

Celtic edge Blackburn
Scottish champions Celtic FC needed a late Henrik Larsson goal to overcome England's Blackburn Rovers FC in the all-British affair in Glasgow. Blackburn had the better of their opponents for much of the match, but the prolific former Swedish international was on target five minutes from the end to leave the tie finely poised.

Fulham on form
England's other representatives, Fulham FC, Ipswich Town FC and Leeds United AFC, all won. Fulham beat ten-man NK Dinamo Zagreb 3-0 in Croatia, while Ipswich and Leeds both secured 1-0 home wins against Czech side FC Slovan Liberec and Israel's Hapoel Tel-Aviv FC respectively.

Málaga recover
Of the Spanish sides in action, RC Celta de Vigo overcame Norway's Viking FK 3-0 at home and Málaga CF came from behind to beat Poland's KS Amica Wronki 2-1. However, 2000/01 finalists Deportivo Alavés needed a last-minute Abelardo Fernández goal to draw 1-1 with Turkey's Besiktas JK in Vitoria.

Mixed fortunes
All three German teams were away and had mixed fortunes. Hertha BSC Berlin won 1-0 at APOEL Nicosia FC, but VfB Stuttgart were held 0-0 by Hungary's Ferencvárosi TC and SV Werder Bremen lost 2-1 at Dutch side SBV Vitesse.

Ten men win
Paris Saint-Germain FC triumphed 2-0 at FC National Bucuresti despite being reduced to ten men, while there were notable wins for FC Porto, 1-0 at FK Austria Wien, and FC PAOK Thessaloniki, who beat Grasshopper-Club 2-1 at home. FK Partizan, RSC Anderlecht, Boavista FC and SK Sturm Graz also picked up home victories.
