Basel blow
The 32-year-old broke a bone in his foot in training with the English Premiership side on Monday, which will require surgery followed by up to three months' rehabilitation. Mendieta will therefore sit out Thursday's UEFA Cup quarter-final second leg against FC Basel 1893, having played 73 minutes of last week's 2-0 defeat in Switzerland. The former Valencia CF captain, who is in his third campaign with the north-east club, will also watch Middlesbrough's FA Cup quarter-final replay against Charlton Athletic FC from the stands.
