Hasselbaink has eyes on Eindhoven

After Middlesbrough FC's comeback against FC Basel 1893, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink said "it would be a real pity not to go all the way" in the UEFA Cup.

Despite playing a crucial role as Middlesbrough FC staged a blistering recovery to reach the UEFA Cup semi-finals and describing the 4-1 victory against FC Basel 1893 as "a magnificent night", Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink is urging his team-mates not to lose sight of their ultimate aim - a place in the final in Eindhoven on 10 May.

Thunderous effort

The Dutch striker was introduced as a half-time substitute - a moment identifed as the turning point in the tie by Basel coach Christian Gross - as Steve McClaren's side fought back from a goal down at the Riverside stadium and a 3-0 aggregate deficit to take the lead on the night thanks to two Mark Viduka strikes. Moments after Basel defender Daniel Majstorovic had been dismissed, Hasselbaink restored parity overall with an unstoppable drive from the edge of the area, paving the way for Massimo Maccarone's 90th-minute goal, which took Middlesbrough into the last four.

Final ambition
"It's absolutely magnificent," Hasselbaink told uefa.com. "It's magnificent for the club, the players and the fans. It may be the best European night of my career and it's a big step for the club but it's already in the past. We must realise we haven't done anything yet. Having got to the semi-finals, we must make sure we go on to the final and do our utmost to try to win it. We are so close to it now, it would be a real pity not to go all the way. We have to go for it and I promise you, we're going to give it our best shot."

Steaua test
Romanian champions FC Steaua Bucuresti provide the next opposition and Hasselbaink has an idea what to expect from the two legs. "Steaua have to be a good side if they've got to the semi-finals, so we can't underestimate them," he said. "We have two tough matches against them, but what semi-final is ever easy? Now everyone left in the competition will look at us and realise we don't give up easily but we have to give our best in the semi-final and try to make it to Eindhoven. There's a real desire here to get to the final and try to win it."

'All or nothing'
Hasselbaink had contributed eleven goals in 2006 prior to the second leg against Basel, and admitted his omission from the starting lineup was hard to take. "I expected to play and I was so disappointed when I found out I wasn't. I just wanted to get out there because I knew it would be a great match, I believed we could do it and I wanted to be part of it. When I came on for the second half, I thought 'All or nothing'. When you're left out you can only try to prove the manager wrong when you come on, and that's what I did. Luckily everyone was magnificent, so we managed to create a historic night for this club."
