Deportivo out to finish job

RC Deportivo La Coruña are one of the fancied teams striving to reach the second group stage.

Eight teams will battle it out tonight for the remaining three places in the UEFA Champions League second group stage.

Time to relax
Already through to the last 16 are Arsenal FC, BV Borussia Dortmund, Valencia CF, FC Basel, Real Madrid CF, AS Roma, Internazionale FC, AFC Ajax, Juventus FC, Manchester United FC, Bayer 04 Leverkusen, AC Milan and FC Barcelona.

Meaningless for Bayern
The remaining trio taking their place in Friday's draw will be known after the conclusion of Groups E, F, G and H in the first group stage this evening. Only Group F is completely settled in terms of Champions League qualification, with United and Leverkusen through, while only one team of all those in action have nothing to play for - FC Bayern München, who cannot even reach the UEFA Cup regardless of what they do tonight.

Dynamo decider
FC Dynamo Kyiv will qualify from Group E if they win at home against Juventus, who are already through and virtually certain of top spot. The Ukrainians can also qualify if they draw and Newcastle United FC fail to beat Feyenoord, or if they lose and the game in Rotterdam ends in a draw. Newcastle will go through if they take all the points and Dynamo fail to win, while Feyenoord can only go through if they win and Dynamo lose. The Dutch team can steal the UEFA Cup spot from Newcastle if they defeat Sir Bobby Robson's team, while Dynamo are guaranteed at least third place whatever their result.

Seeding at stake
In Group F, United and Leverkusen are already through, but Leverkusen will finish in top spot if they can better at Old Trafford the 2-1 win United took from the BayArena. Maccabi Haifa FC will take the UEFA Cup place ahead of Olympiakos Pireaus FC unless they lose 3-0. If Maccabi score in Athens, Olympiakos will need to beat them by four clear goals to reach the UEFA Cup.

Bayern certainty
RC Deportivo La Coruña will qualify from Group G if they win their last match, away at Milan, who have already gone through. Deportivo will also qualify if Lens fail to beat Bayern. Lens will progress if they win in Munich and Deportivo fail to win. If Deportivo draw and Lens win then the French side are through with a better overall goal difference. Lens and Deportivo are guaranteed at least a UEFA Cup place with Bayern, on just one point from five matches, already eliminated.

Perfect record
Barcelona are the only side tonight who are already certain to top their group, with a perfect record so far. Club Brugge KV will qualify from Group H as runners-up if they win at FC Lokomotiv Moskva or if they draw and Galatasaray SK fail to win at Camp Nou. Galatasaray will qualify if they win, as long as Brugge fail to win. But Lokomotiv will edge past them both if they beat Brugge and Galatasaray lose. The UEFA Cup spot is wide open.
