Newcastle lead late run to last 16

Newcastle United FC, FC Lokomotiv Moskva and RC Deportivo La Coruña have qualified for the second group stage.

Newcastle United FC became the first club in UEFA Champions League history to lose their opening three games and still qualify for the second group stage after Craig Bellamy struck in the final minute to seal an amazing 3-2 victory at Feyenoord.

Unlikely passage
Newcastle needed maximum points and anything other than a FC Dvnamo Kyiv win at home to Juventus FC to seal an unlikely passage to the last 16. Their hopes of progression appeared to be forlorn as as Mariano Bombarda and Anthony Lurling struck second-half goals to cancel out earlier efforts from Craig Bellamy and Hugo Viana. However, Welsh international Bellamy had the final say as the game entered added time.

Dynamo denied
In Kiev, Dynamo had fate in their own hands and would have qualified with a victory, but goals after the interval from Marcelo Salas and Marcelo Zalayeta saw Juve win 2-1 and finish on 13 points, four clear of Newcastle, and six ahead of Dynamo, who enter the UEFA Cup third round.

Deportivo victory
RC Deportivo La Coruña beat AC Milan, the section winners, to ensure they were the second team to qualify from Group G. Jon Dahl Tomasson opened the scoring at the San Siro but goals from Diego Tristán and Roy Makaay, his seventh of the first group stage, eased the Galicians through.

Lens in UEFA Cup
The result means that RC Lens will also have to be satisfied with a place in the third round of the UEFA Cup despite holding FC Bayern München to a thrilling 3-3 draw at the Olympiastadion. Bayern raced into a two-goal lead inside 20 minutes but brave Lens drew level through Dagui Bakari and a Thorsten Fink own goal. Markus Feulner restored the hosts' advantage but Jocelyn Blanchard struck late to level matters.

Lokomotiv through
FC Lokomotiv Moskva are another team celebrating a place in the last 16 after completing a remarkable turnaround in fortunes by soundly beating Club Brugge KV 2-0 in freezing conditions in Moscow. After collecting just a point from their opening four matches, the Muscovites built on a Matchday Five victory at Galatasaray SK to advance thanks to goals from Julio Cesar and Dmitri Loskov.

Perfect record
Already assured a top seeding in Friday's draw, FC Barcelona teased their way to their sixth win as many games, beating Galatasaray 3-1 to  join AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain FC and FC Spartak Moskva as the only clubs to negotiate the opening stage with a 100 per cent record. Dani García, Gerard López and Geovanni, with a stunning strike, were Barcelona's goalscorers.

United on top
Manchester United FC finished top in Group F after completed a double over the side which eliminated them at the semi-final stage last season, Bayer 04 Leverkusen,  2-0 with goals in either half from Juan Sebastián Verón and Ruud van Nistelrooij. Maccabi Haifa FC drew 3-3 with Olympiakos Piraeus FC to qualify for the UEFA Cup after an impressive showing on their competition debut.
