Emotional return for Cañizares

Santiago Cañizares has been recalled to the Spain squad to face Bulgaria in Grenada next Wednesday.

Goalkeeper Santiago Cañizares has been recalled to the Spain squad to face Bulgaria in Granada next Wednesday after agonisingly missing out on 2002 FIFA World Cup selection following a bizarre accident involving a bottle of aftershave.

Severed tendon
The Valencia CF custodian was set to be Spain's No1 in Korea/Japan but was denied the opportunity after a shard of glass dropped on to his foot and cut into the tendon in his big toe after he accidentally smashed the bottle against a bathroom sink. If he plays Cañizares will earn his 36th cap against Hungary.

Raúl not included
Club Atlético de Madrid striker José Mari is also in Iñiki Sáez's 18-man squad after hitting a hat-trick last Sunday against Athletic de Bilbao. He is called-up in place of the injured Real Madrid CF striker Raúl González, while Fernando Morientes misses out after failing to cement a regular starting berth at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Group leaders
Spain have won both of their matches in UEFA EURO 2004™ qualifying Group 6 and are well placed at the top of the section. Hungary are also atop Group 4 having drawn in Sweden and beaten San Marino.

Spain squad
Casillas, Cañizares, Puyol, Salgado, Helguera, Raúl Bravo, Marchena, Capdevila, Mendieta, Xavi, Capi, Joaquín, Albelda, Baraja, Vicente, José Mari, Tristán, Guti.
