Paraguay midfielder Carlos Paredes, a veteran of three FIFA World Cups, has become Sporting Clube de Portugal's latest summer signing.

Paraguay midfielder Carlos Paredes has become Sporting Clube de Portugal’s latest summer signing.

Three-year contract
The 30-year-old, who has agreed a three-year contract with the option of an additional 12 months, previously played in the Iberian country when he spent two seasons with FC Porto - winning the Portuguese Cup in 2001 - prior to a four-season stay with Reggina Calcio which ended this summer. He then played in all three of Paraguay's games in Germany, his third FIFA World Cup.

'Other offers'
"I had other offers from England and Mexico but Sporting's interest has been there for a long time so I decided to come to Lisbon, where I expect to be very happy," said Paredes, who won five titles with Club Olimpia in his homeland. "It's important to play in a competition such as the UEFA Champions League as well as trying to win the championship." Sporting enter the former competition in the group stage after finishing runners-up in the Liga last season.

Moisés problem
Meanwhile, Sporting could be about to cancel a deal agreed last month to sign Brazilian defender Moisés because of complications involving the 27-year-old's former clubs Cruzeiro EC and FC Krylya Sovetov Samara. The only other player recruited by Sporting this summer is Sweden midfielder Pontus Farnerud.
