First eleven picked for UEFA Cup

The eleven victors in the UEFA Intertoto Cup included, for the first time, teams from Turkey, Switzerland, Cyprus, Austria, the Netherlands and Slovenia.

Eleven sides have made it through the revamped UEFA Intertoto Cup to the UEFA Cup second qualifying round - and for the first time teams from Turkey, Switzerland, Cyprus, Austria, the Netherlands and Slovenia have won a final in this competition.

French double
France have been the most successful nation in UEFA Intertoto Cup, and having uniquely been allowed two entries it is not surprising that both their teams made it through. Olympique de Marseille, who also were one of the three qualifiers a year ago, defeated FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk on away goals after a 2-2 draw in Ukraine, while 1997 victors AJ Auxerre repeated the trick with a 4-2 aggregate win against FC Farul Constanta after a 1-0 loss in Romania. Germany rank second in the all-time table, and their entrants were also successful as Hertha BSC Berlin won 2-0 at FC Moskva after a goalless game last week.

Cypriot success
Newcastle United FC, beaten in a 2001 final, went one better this time as they triumphed 3-0 at Lillestrøm SK and 4-1 overall. England had previously had three winners and Denmark one, but Silkeborg IF's 1996 triumph has been emulated a decade on by Odense BK who progressed past Hibernian FC on away goals despite a 2-1 loss in Scotland. OB began their campaign in the second round but two qualifiers started one stage earlier. Ethnikos Achnas FC of Cyprus had already knocked out Albanian side FK Partizani and NK Osijek of Croatia before their exciting 4-3 aggregate success against Israel's Maccabi Petach-Tikva FC, while Slovenia's NK Maribor pulled off the shock of the round with a 3-2 overall victory against two-time winners Villarreal CF.

Touma heroics
Of other teams who came in for the second round, Grasshopper-Club gave Switzerland some glory as they came from behind to defeat KAA Gent 2-1 at home and 3-2 on aggregate, Turkey's Kayserispor enjoyed their European debut with their 2-0 win against Larissa FC and SV Ried of Austria followed a 3-1 victory on their own turf against FC Tiraspol with a 1-1 draw in Moldova. Dutch team FC Twente were given a bye to the final round and lost the first leg at Sweden's Kalmar FF only to win the return 3-1 with a Sharbel Touma hat-trick.

UEFA Cup draw
Marseille, Auxerre, Hertha, Newcastle, OB, Achnas, Maribor, Grasshoppers, Kayserispor, Ried and Twente will be in Friday's UEFA Cup second qualifying round draw hoping to at least match the achievement of FC Girondins de Bordeaux, who in 1995/96 became the only Intertoto winners to go on to reach the final of the senior competition.
