København take city pride

FC København's derby win was the pick of the weekend domestic results for the UEFA Champions League contenders from outside the big five leagues.

FC København bounced back from losing at Celtic FC in the UEFA Champions League as they defeated 'New Firm' city rivals Brøndby IF in front of more than 40,000 spectators while RSC Anderlecht were humbled in a top-of-the-table meeting in Belgium.

Berglund breaks duck
København welcomed Brøndby to the Parken stadium and after the visitors had defender Mark Howard sent off for a second booking ten minutes before the break, the home team sealed victory through Fredrik Berglund on 50 minutes. Anderlecht, meanwhile, saw their unbeaten start in Belgium ended in emphatic style with a 4-1 defeat at home against KRC Genk. The teams were joint league leaders at kick-off but Kevin Vandenbergh struck twice for Genk in the opening ten minutes, and although Moubarak Boussoufa pulled one back midway through the second half, two late Goran Ljubojević efforts settled matters.

Olympiacos joy
Olympiacos CFP made it six wins out of six in Greece with a 1-0 success at Iraklis FC. Although Rivaldo, Pantelis Kafes, Michał Żewłakow, Abdeslam Ouaddou and Erol Bulut were all injured and Olympiacos captain Predrag Djordjević was rested, Miloš Marić ensured victory with a 25th-minute free-kick against opponents who played the last 27 minutes with ten men after Grigorios Papazaharias's professional foul on Nery Alberto Castillo. Olympiacos are now five points clear of Panathinaikos FC while AEK Athens FC are fifth following a 3-1 win against Ergotelis FC.

Rui Costa returns
SL Benfica's start in Portugal has not been promising but they hit form on Sunday with a 4-1 home win against CD Das Aves. Rui Costa ended a three-week absence by coming off the bench for the second half to great effect with the score at 1-1. Leaders FC Porto and third-place Sporting Clube de Portugal are both in action on Monday night.

Russian hopefuls held
The title race remains tight in Russia as leaders PFC CSKA Moskva were held 2-2 at FC Saturn Moskovskaya Oblast. Their two-point advantage may disappear when FC Lokomotiv Moskva meet FC Rubin Kazan on Monday, but FC Spartak Moskva missed the chance to move level with the leaders eight fixtures from the end of the season after they drew 3-3 at FC Moskva.

Contenders triumph
FC Shakhtar Donetsk and FC Dynamo Kyiv remain level on points at the top of the Ukrainian Premier League as they continued their unbeaten starts with victories. Shakhtar secured a 3-1 result against FC Stal Alcevsk while Dynamo defeated FC Tavriya Simferopol 2-1, with Taras Lutsenko replacing the off-form Olexandr Shovkovskiy and injured Olexandr Rybka in goal.

Celtic relief
Celtic FC stretched their run of consecutive Scottish Premier League wins to five but life was not made easy for them at Falkirk FC before Aiden McGeady's late winner maintained their three-point advantage over Heart of Midlothian FC. PSV Eindhoven were not so fortunate, however, as they were held 0-0 at SC Heerenveen and now trail leaders AFC Ajax by two points.

Galatasaray denied
Galatasaray SK's stuttering league form continued as they saw a 3-1 lead against Konyaspor turn into a 3-3 draw, and they now lie ninth in the Süper Lig, nine points adrift of leaders Vastel Manisaspor. FC Steaua Bucuresti drew a bad-tempered game with FC Politehnica Iasi 1-1, each team having two players sent off as the champions conceded a 93rd-minute penalty. Steaua are now nine points behind FC Dinamo 1948 Bucuresti, but FC Levski Sofia are still on top in Bulgaria following a 2-0 derby win against PFC Slavia Sofia.
