Timely revival takes PSG through

Paris Saint-Germain FC 4-0 Panathinaikos FC Goals from Pauleta and Bonaventure Kalou lifted PSG off the bottom of Group G and into the next round.

Early pressure
Guy Lacombe's side had started the night bottom of the section and were on the backfoot in the opening minutes as Mickaël Landreau was forced to save from Alexandros Tziolis, Sotirios Leontiou and Georgios Theodoridis. However, after weathering the early storm from the Greek giants, the French team exerted some pressure of their own with Kalou striking the post and then heading narrowly wide shortly after.

Pauleta breakthrough
Veteran Portuguese international Pauleta then broke the deadlock in the 29th minute, finding the net with his right foot after being set up by Kalou for his third goal in the competition. Things got even better for PSG moments after the half-time break as they scored three times in seven minutes to kill the contest.

Goal rush
First Pauleta claimed his second after a pass from Cristian Rodriguez, before Kalou added a third from a David Hellebuyck cross on 52 minutes. The Ivory Coast international doubled his account when he turned in a ball from Rodriguez in the 54th minute and PSG could have increased their advantage further but for a fine save by Pierre Ebede to deny Hellebuyck.

Both qualify
By collecting their first win of the group stage, PSG climbed to five points and ensured themselves second spot - ahead, on goal difference, of Hapoel Tel-Aviv FC who were held at home by FK Mladá Boleslav. The Ligue 1 side will now meet a team moving over from the UEFA Champions League while Panathinaikos have one of the third-placed clubs awaiting them in Friday's draw.
