Silvestre signs on for United

Manchester United FC's Mikaël Silvestre has signed a new four-year contract.

Staying put
Silvestre, whose previous deal was due to expire in the summer, making him free to talk to other clubs from 1 January, said he had never had any international of leaving Old Trafford.

'Great club'
"Looking for another club and weighing up other possible moves was never in my thoughts," he said. "I am really pleased to have agreed a new deal because I'm proud to be a member of this team. It is such a great club with great players."

Key figure
A United player since September 1999, the 25-year-old has been a key figure in the Premiership team's recent resurgence having switched from left-back to an unaccustomed central defensive berth.

Ferguson joy
Meanwhile, manager Sir Alex Ferguson said: "I was delighted that Mikaël wanted to stay at Manchester United, and for the last few weeks the negotiations between both sides have gone very smoothly.

'Terrific future'
"He's been playing really well for us this season, and he is still a young man who has not reached his peak," added Ferguson. "We can see a terrific future for him at United." Silvestre, who has 16 France caps, has made 163 appearances for United, scoring two goals.
