Strained muscle
Van der Vaart strained a muscle in his left thigh at the beginning of December, but was expected to join Ronald Koeman's squad for their winter break training camp in Portugal.
Recovery sessions
However, a scan today revealed a new tear and fluid still lingering around the site of the injury, meaning the 19-year-old will only take part in recovery training sessions in the Algarve.
