AZ lose Mendes da Silva

AZ Alkmaar will be without David Mendes da Silva for several weeks after the Dutch international sustained a knee injury during an Eredivisie draw at FC Groningen.

AZ Alkmaar will be without David Mendes da Silva for several weeks after the Dutch international sustained a knee injury during Sunday's 1-1 draw at FC Groningen.

Ligament damage
Mendes da Silva, who made his international debut against England in November, tore ligaments in his right knee just before half-time while operating in central defence yesterday. Having been suspended for the first leg of AZ's UEFA Cup Round of 32 tie against Fenerbahçe SK, a 3-3 draw in Istanbul, the 24-year-old will miss Thursday's return and up to six weeks afterwards.
