Further tests bring gloom for Sagnol

FC Bayern München and France right-back Willy Sagnol may not be fit for the start of next season due to the knee injury he sustained in Milan.

FC Bayern München right-back Willy Sagnol may not be fit for the start of next season after receiving bad news about a knee injury sustained in Milan.

Initial diagnosis
The French international left the field after 68 minutes of Bayern's 2-2 UEFA Champions League quarter-final draw against AC Milan at San Siro following a clash with Kaká, and was initially diagnosed with ligament damage in his right knee and told that he would be out of action for six to eight weeks.

Further tests
Further tests have revealed that he has damaged cartilage as well as ligaments in the knee, and following an operation set to take place in Augsburg tonight, the 30-year-old - who played 23 Bundesliga games and nine more in the UEFA Champions League this season - is likely to be out of action for four months. If so he would miss France's home UEFA EURO 2008™ encounters with Ukraine and Georgia in early June.
