Last-ever Yugoslavia squad announced

Dejan Savicevic has announced the Yugoslavia squad for the UEFA EURO 2004™ qualifying game with Azerbaijan.

Coach Dejan Savicevic has announced the Yugoslavia squad for the UEFA EURO 2004™ qualifying game with Azerbaijan next Wednesday.

Name change
The squad is expected the be the last to be announced under the name Yugoslavia, as the United Nations is expected to confirm on Monday that the country’s name will be changed to Serbia and Montenegro with immediate effect.

First selections
Savicevic has called up three new players to the squad, with midfield players Jovan Markoski of FK Zeleznik, FK Partizan’s Zvonimir Vukic and striker Danijel Ljuboja of French side RC Strasbourg all in the group for the first time.

Savicevic cautious
Savicevic was cautiously optimistic ahead of his side’s home game with Azerbaijan, which will be played in Podgorica. “We are favourites, that is true. But I [have seen] so many matches in my life when better teams, on paper, have not won,” he said. “I believe in my team, [these are] very experienced and quality players, and I expect three points. We must play very offensively and try to score a goal in [the] opening minutes.”

Injury worries
However, Savicevic faces a number of injury problems ahead of the game. Experienced defender Sinisa Mihajlovic and forward Darko Kovacevic are both suspended, while Nemanja Vidic, Zoran Mirkovic, Nenad Dzodic, Goran Djorovic, Dejan Stefanovic, Ognjen Koroman and Ivica Dragutinovic are all ruled out through injury.
