Klose leads Bremen inquest

Striker Miroslav Klose concluded that "the whole team played poorly" as Werder Bremen lost 3-0 away to RCD Espanyol in the first leg of their semi-final tie.

Werder Bremen striker Miroslav Klose was the among the first to admit that he contributed to Werder Bremen's 3-0 UEFA Cup semi-final first leg defeat at RCD Espanyol.

Klose quiet
While Espanyol striker Walter Pandiani took his tournament goal-haul to eleven with his header against the Bundesliga outfit, Klose only managed to touch the ball as many times during the defeat in Barcelona and the German international admitted he did not enjoy one of his finest hours. "The whole team played poorly," he said. "Nobody played to the standards we are used to and I include myself in that. I played very badly and it's very disappointing to lose 3-0." Moisés Hurtado and Ferrán Corominas scored the Spanish side's other goals while Klose could only look on in dismay as a bad night was compounded by the sending-off of goalkeeper Tim Wiese in the 58th-minute.

'No complaints'
For his part Wiese also acknowledged his more obvious culpability. Racing out of the area to beat Raúl Tamudo to a pass that had sprung the offside trap, the Bremen custodian arrived late and sent the midfielder sprawling to the ground. "I've no complaints about the red card," said Wiese. "Strange things can happen in a match and unfortunately they did tonight, but that's football. Tonight didn't go at all to plan."

Pasanen disappointment
The dismissal occurred with the score already 2-0 and Petri Pasanen was particularly frustrated that his side came within two minutes of holding out for a two-goal defeat. "It was so disappointing," said the rangy defender. "At 2-0 we were still in the tie but the third goal was terrible. People said we were the better side on paper but it's on the pitch where it counts and they were clever. They gave us a lot of possession but we didn't create anything with it."

Jensen cornered
Bremen's Daniel Jensen who was sacrificed to make way for substitute goalkeeper Andreas Reinke but it was conceding two goals from set-pieces that appeared to have caused him the most grief. He said: "We didn't expect to lose 3-0. We knew it would be tough but they scored two goals from corners. You can't always stop those so they were a bit lucky. At 2-0 down we knew we had to score and then they hit us again. We're still in it but it's going to be very hard for us now."
