Brøndby surge for Danish double

Brøndby IF, who lost in the UEFA Women's Cup semi-finals to Arsenal LFC this season, will be back in the competition in 2007/08.

Brøndby IF, who lost in the UEFA Women's Cup semi-finals to Arsenal LFC this season, will be back in the competition in 2007/08 after retaining the Danish league title.

Vital victory
Having reached the last four of Europe for the second time – and just as in 2003/04 against Umeå IK lost to the eventual winners - Brøndby were pushed all the way in the league this season by 2002/03 UEFA Women's Cup finalists Fortuna Hjørring. With three games to go Brøndby, who had trailed for much of the season, were a point ahead when they welcomed their rivals for a crucial league fixture just eleven days after a 2-1 victory in the Danish Women’s Cup final. And they repeated that scoreline, before a 6-0 defeat of Velje BK wrapped up their fifth straight title and ended with a 2-1 win at Skovbakken IK Risskov, their 12th victory in a row in all competitions.

Familiar faces
Their success means that all of the semi-finalists from 2006/07; Arsenal, runners-up Umeå, Brøndby and Norwegians champions Kolbotn IL will compete for the UEFA Women’s Cup next term. Of the teams in the last eight, only German title-winners 1. FFC Frankfurt will return. The other German entrants, 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam, finished third in the Frauen Bundesliga and only England, thanks to Arsenal's success, will have a second team in Europe - league runners-up Everton LFC. VV Ter Leede took the Dutch title from Saestum and Valur Reykjavík will represent Iceland in place of Breidablik. Among other notable entrants are convincing French champions Olympique Lyonnais and unbeaten Russian title-winners WFC Rossiyanka.
