Defender Dorin Goian's second-half strike gave FC Steaua Bucuresti a crucial edge against Zagłębie Lubin ahead of next Wednesday's UEFA Champions League second qualifying round second leg in the Romanian capital.
Steaua knew they were going to be in for a tough match and so it proved as they took on the Polish champions without a number of important first-team regulars in Zaglebia. Sorin Ghionea, Victoras Iacob, Valentin Badea and Vasilica Cristocea were among those unavailable for selection by new coach Gheorghe Hagi but the visitors held firm until the interval.
Steaua then struck the only goal of the match eleven minutes into the second period through Goian. After reaching the group stage for the first time in 20 years last season the 1985/86 European champions will hope to move to within one round of the competition proper again next Wednesday.
