Walter Smith was a relieved man as Nacho Novo's last-minute goal gave Rangers FC the advantage in their UEFA Champions League third qualifying round tie against FK Crvena Zvezda.

Novo winner
Despite several attacking substitutions from Smith, it seemed the Scottish runners-up would be going to Belgrade in a fortnight with a 0-0 draw. However, one of Smith's introductions, Novo, had other ideas as his ran on to Lee McCulloch's flick and powerfully fired in to the delight of his manager, whose team are yet to concede this season.

Frustration ends
"I thought it was going to be one of those frustrating nights," Smith said. "We worked extremely hard and there were few opportunities for either team in the game. Both teams played very well defensively and we managed to get a late goal right at the end. Obviously we are delighted with that."

Specialist
Novo is something of a specialist at scoring as a substitute, having also done so on the first day of the Scottish season to double Rangers' lead in their 3-0 win at Inverness Caledonian Thistle FC. "Nacho has been coming off the bench when the opposition are maybe a little bit tired and he's always bright and lively as he showed again tonight," Smith said.
