Atlético leave Aguirre purring

Club Atlético de Madrid coach Javier Aguirre was left to reflect on "a perfect game" after his side's emphatic 3-0 UEFA Cup triumph at home against FK Vojvodina on Thursday.

Impressive firepower
Aguirre's side produced one of their most impressive attacking performances in recent years as they dismantled the Serbian side with Argentinian youngster Sergio Agüero and Uruguayan striker Diego Forlán in electric form up front, scoring a goal apiece. They were ably supported by Maxi Rodríguez and Portuguese internationals Simão and Maniche, with their Mexican coach concluding: "It was a perfect game for everyone at Atlético."

Independiente heritage
Agüero, named player of the tournament in Argentina's recent triumph in the FIFA U-20 World Cup, was delighted with his new strike partner Forlán, who like him began his professional career at CA Independiente. "The fans at the [Vicente] Calderon [Stadium] want to enjoy themselves and see an attack-minded Atlético," said the 19-year-old. "I've got a great understanding with Forlán and like me he is from Independiente."

Fast friends
Agüero joined Atlético from the Argentinian side for almost €20m last year but had a muted first season at the club playing second fiddle to Fernando Torres. Forlán joined the club for €21m from Villarreal CF just before the iconic Torres moved to Liverpool FC and Aguirre is thrilled with their nascent partnership. "They look as though they've been playing together for years," he said. "They are going to provide plenty of enjoyment for the fans."
