Dominant Dortmund retain hope

Dortmund 3-0 Lokomotiv Moskva Dortmund brush stay in the chase for the last eight.

Full of confidence
Goals from Torsten Frings, Jan Koller and Marcio Amoroso wrapped up the Group C victory for a slick Dortmund side who will visit the Giuseppe Meazza stadium next week full of confidence after a faultless performance. Despite a busy display from the visitors, the first-half chances all fell Dortmund's way. Koller whipped a half-volley over the crossbar on seven minutes and Ewerthon followed suit with a quarter of an hour on the clock.

Kehl cracker
Dortmund opted for an aerial approach for much of the game but were most dangerous when shooting from distance, as Sebastian Kehl proved on 32 minutes. He unleashed a venomous strike from the edge of the Lokomotiv area which clattered off the inside of goalkeeper Sergei Ovchinnikov's left-hand post and rolled across the face of goal to safety.

Frings on target
Seven minutes later Frings tried his luck from range and duly broke the deadlock. A corner was headed out to the midfield player - unmarked 20 metres from goal - and he had time to measure a curling, right-footed effort which left Ovchinnikov rooted to the spot.

Lehmann acrobatics
As the clock ticked down towards half-time, Brazilian Evanilson saw his long-range shot whistle narrowly wide - but moments after the restart the scores were almost levelled. Just two minutes of the second half had elapsed when Marat Izmailov tried an audacious shot from distance and drew a spectacular save from Jens Lehmann, who arched his back to tip the deflected 30-metre effort over the crossbar.

Koller bottle
It was 2-0 on 58 minutes when Koller tucked the ball in from close range for his seventh goal of the campaign. Madouni's lofted pass from the left was nudged back into the middle by Evanilson and Koller bravely went in to turn the ball past Ovchinnikov and double Dortmund's lead.

Magic Amoroso
A fine piece of individual skill led to Dortmund's third goal eight minutes later. Amoroso picked up the ball with his back to goal 18 metres out before spinning and firing a high, curling effort past Ovchinnikov. The Russian goalkeeper was hardly to blame for any of the three goals he conceded and showed his quality with a point-blank save to deny Christian Wörns as a spirited game simmered down towards full time.

Hopes fading
Dortmund, whose hopes of retaining their German Bundesliga title are fading fast, still harbour hopes of progressing in this competition. But unless a remarkable night of Champions League football lies in store next Tuesday, Sammer and his side could be left counting the cost of Javier Portillo's last-gasp equaliser here two weeks ago.
