Toulouse fail to break CSKA resistance

Toulouse FC's first UEFA Cup appearance in 20 years proved a frustrating experience as they were held to a goalless draw by PFC CSKA Sofia.

Difficult task
The French side had harboured hopes of playing in this season's UEFA Champions League before losing to Liverpool FC in the third qualifying round, but they now face a difficult task to reach to the UEFA Cup group stage after failing to break down their well-organised Bulgarian opponents.

Bergougnoux impact
Toulouse coach Elie Baup made his intentions clear by naming the same eleven that defeated Olympique de Marseille last weekend, but they struggled to put the visitors under pressure in an uneventful first half. Baup's decision to send Bryan Bergougnoux on in place of Swedish striker Johan Elmander after almost an hour's play proved wise, the young Frenchman almost making an immediate impact after skipping past centre-backs Yordan Todorov and Aleksandar Tunchev.

CSKA resistance
But goalkeeper Valentin Iliev was in determined mood and he denied Bergougnoux and fellow substitute André-Pierre Gignac on numerous occasions as Toulouse finished strongly. The Bulgarian runners-up had few opportunities to score themselves, yet resisted impressively and will be confident of claiming a notable scalp in front of their fans on 4 October.
