Portugal Telecom (PT) has been appointed the official telecommunications partner for UEFA EURO 2004™ in Portugal next summer.
The partnership agreement was signed in Lisbon today by UEFA Chief Executive Gerhard Aigner and PT group executive president Miguel Horta e Costa, in the presence of Portugal's deputy prime minister, José Luís Arnaut, and the Portuguese FA president, Gilberto Madaíl, who is also chairman of the board of Euro 2004, S.A., the organising body set up for next year's final round.
Services and support
PT is joining NTT Com as an official technology partner. Its contribution to one of the world's major sporting events will be to provide services and support in 'hard wired' voice and data communications, fixed line telephone hardware, local area network and wide area network communications as well as internet access connections for the tournament.
PT will also receive an integrated marketing package including on-screen credits in Portugal, perimeter signage at the Portuguese national team's matches, commercial air-time opportunities and internet promotion rights.

"Providing the correct hardware installations and having a fully functioning and modern telecommunications network is a key requirement for staging such a large football tournament. I am convinced that with this partnership with PT, the fans, staff and media attending UEFA EURO 2004™ will be well served."
Mr Horta e Costa said: "The UEFA European Football Championship 2004 is an important event for everyone here that will allow Portugal to demonstrate our ability to successfully organise such large-scale international events. As the biggest economic Portuguese group, the PT group has a responsibility to actively participate in the organisation of UEFA EURO 2004™, as it did successfully in Expo 98 and Porto 2001 - European Capital of Culture."

Other official EURO 2004™ partners are Canon, Carlsberg, Coca-Cola, Hyundai Motor Company, JVC, MasterCard and McDonald's. CTT Correios and Galp Energia are national supporters of the event in Portugal.
