Deivid was proud that Fenerbahçe SK had "deserved to win" after putting in a diligent performance in Istanbul to beat FC Internazionale Milano 1-0.

Team effort
The Turkish title-holders have never got through to the UEFA Champions League knockout rounds but a superb start to Group G, with three points against the team most tipped to progress, has given Zico's side a real fillip and no one was more delighted about that than Deivid, who broke the deadlock just before half-time with a spectacular volley. "We deserved to win," said the Brazilian playmaker. "The whole team played well. It is good to score in a Champions League game. All the team was highly motivated, we concentrated hard and we reaped the reward for all this work."

Marvellous effort
Gökçek Vederson, drafted in for a rare start to replace the injured Tümer Metin on the left wing, typified Fenerbahçe's spirit with a highly energetic performance and was delighted for the team, and indeed for himself. "Everybody put their all in to deny Inter any space," Vederson said. "I would like to thank Zico for letting me play in the Champions League. I am working really hard and hope to continue to feature."

'Five games to go'
Perhaps the only disappointment for Fenerbahçe was that they did not go on to add to their lead but their defence was not put under sustained pressure and one of those who aided in keeping the clean sheet, Edu, said that it is was only Inter's goalkeeper that prevented a bigger win. "If it hadn't been for Júlio César the score would have been different," Edu said. "Of course it is an advantage to win the first game but there are five games to go and we have to be careful."
