Injury ends Sowunmi's season

Thomas Sowunmi will miss key games for Ferencvárosi TC and Hungary after being ruled out for five months.

Freak accident
Hungarian international Sowunmi fractured his shin playing for the club's reserve team against Újpesti TE on Sunday. The 24-year-old suffered the injury when he collided with an iron pole at the side of the pitch.

Five-month break
He was operated on immediately and faces a five-month recovery period. "He suffered an open wound so we had to sterilise the injury and do the operation straight away," Ferencváros club doctor Jeno Gyarmati said.

Costly absence
As well as missing the championship run-in with Ferencváros, who are second in the first division behind leaders MTK Hungária FC on goal difference, Sowunmi is also likely to be unavailable for Hungary's remaining UEFA EURO 2004™ qualifiers.

European qualifiers
Imre Gellei's side are due to play Group 4 rivals Latvia and San Marino next month before finishing their campaign with games against Latvia in September and Poland in October. Sowunmi, who was born in Nigeria, has scored once in nine appearances for his adopted country.
