Scots lose their skipper

Scotland captain Barry Ferguson is to undergo surgery, ruling him out of the 7 June qualifier against Germany.

Untimely operation
The Rangers FC midfield player will undergo surgery on a pelvic injury on 2 June, five days before Scotland take on the Group 5 leaders at Hampden Park. Colin Cameron of Wolverhampton Wanderers FC is his likely replacement.

Medical advice
Ferguson's club manager, Alex McLeish, said: "We have been advised that Barry needs the operation as early as possible so we have set the 2 June date."

Bread and butter
The Rangers boss added that he wanted Ferguson "fit and ready" for the UEFA Champions League qualifiers in August. "I'm sorry for Scotland but Rangers is his bread and butter," he continued. Rangers were crowned Scottish champions on Sunday.

Scottish hopes
The Germany match is crucial to Scottish hopes of reaching next summer's finals in Portugal. Vogts's team trail Germany on goal difference at the top of Group 5; each has seven points although Germany have played a game less.

Maloney out
Scotland Under-21 striker Shaun Maloney will also be unavailable for international duty this summer after breaking a bone in his foot. Maloney suffered a hairline fracture during Celtic FC's final league game of the season against Kilmarnock FC.
