Karpin takes Spartak post

FC Spartak Moskva have named former Russia midfielder Valeri Karpin as their new general manager. The 39-year-old, who played for Spartak between 1990 and 1994, replaces Sergei Shavlo. Spartak, fourth in the Russian Premier-Liga, will take on FC Dynamo Kyiv in the UEFA Champions League third qualifying round on 13 and 27 August.
