Wisla keeper rewarded for fine form

Adam Piekutowski has signed a new contract with Polish double winners Wisla Kraków.

Hugues injury
Piekutowski started the season on the bench behind first-choice goalkeeper Angelo Hugues. However, after Frenchman Hugues suffered an injury in April the 28-year-old Piekutowski was given his chance by coach Henryk Kasperczak and seized it with both hands, helping Wisla win the league and cup double.

Piekutowski chance
This form has earned him a three-year extension to his contract, which was due to run until June 2004. With former No1 Hugues out of contract, and the club not offering him a new deal, Piekutowski now has the chance to make the goalkeeping shirt his own - starting with the club's opening Champions League second qualifying round match on 30 July. Last season Wisla showed good form in Europe, reaching the fourth round of the UEFA Cup.

Sarnat out of action
With Wisla's other goalkeeper Artur Sarnat still not back from serious injury, youngster Marcin Juszczyk will be Piekutowski's back-up, although the club are expected to try and sign another keeper during the summer.
