Cocu commits to Camp Nou

Dutch international Phillip Cocu has signed a new one-year contract with FC Barcelona to extend his stay until June 2004.

Dutch international Phillip Cocu has signed a new one-year contract with FC Barcelona to extend his stay with the club until at least June 2004.

Show of faith
The out-of-contract Cocu has accepted the deal offered to him by Barcelona's new board of directors, led by president Joan Laporta. According to a club statement, Barça captain Cocu "agreed with the new conditions proposed by the club, underlining his commitment to the club's new sporting project".

Performance-related pay
Cocu, 32, will reportedly command the same salary as before, although written into his contract is a bonus "depending on the goals achieved at the end of next season". The former PSV Eindhoven midfield player has won the Spanish league title and the Copa del Rey since moving to Camp Nou in the summer of 1998. Last season, he made 39 appearances despite a three-month injury lay-off.
