Love conquers all in UEFA Cup goal race

PFC CSKA Moskva striker Vágner Love finished as the leading scorer in the final edition of the UEFA Cup, an eleven-goal haul leaving the Brazilian four short of Jürgen Klinsmann's season-record mark for FC Bayern München in their 1995/96 success.

Top ranking
Love's tally of eleven goals included three against AS Nancy Lorraine in December as CSKA became only the fifth team to finish the UEFA Cup group stage with a maximum haul of 12 points. Hamburger SV forward Ivica Olić was the runner-up, his eighth and ninth goals in the competition coming in the 3-2 semi-final second-leg defeat by Werder Bremen which cost Martin Jol's side a place in Wednesday's showpiece in Istanbul.

Diego hits six
With both Bremen and fellow finalists FC Shakhtar Donetsk having started the campaign in the UEFA Champions League group stage, they barely registered on the scorers' chart. Bremen's Diego struck six UEFA Cup goals – plus one in the UEFA Champions League – but was suspended for the final.

Klinsmann on top
Love's tally has been surpassed by just four players in the history of the competition. Klinsmann's 15 goals remains the all-time high, while John Wark (14), Derlei (12) and Walter Pandiani (12) complete the list of the UEFA Cup's most prolific marksmen. Only strikes from the first round onwards count towards the totals.
