Rosenborg waiting for winners

FC BATE Borisov and Bohemian FC meet in the first qualifying round knowing Rosenborg BK await in round two.

Looking ahead
In all, 20 teams are in second-leg action in ten ties and most of the fixtures remain in the balance. However, two sides who can be confident of progress are FC Dinamo Tbilisi and FK Vardar, after both had 3-0 home victories last week against SK Tirana of Albania and Barry Town AFC of Wales respectively. In the next round, should they prevail, Georgian title-holders Dinamo will face Grazer AK of Austria, while F.Y.R. Macedonia's Vardar have Russian contenders PFC CSKA Moskva in their sights.

Rosenborg waiting
Things are less certain in Dublin, where FC BATE Borisov of Belarus have travelled to the Irish capital to take on Bohemian FC. BATE have a 1-0 first-leg lead, but both sides will fancy their chances of taking their place in the second qualifying round and a meeting with perpetual Norwegian champions Rosenborg.

Mixed emotion
BATE coach Yuri Puntus was "happy with the way we played" last time out, but will hope his side are not made to pay for failing to add to Yevgeni Lashankov's goal last week. Stephen Kenny, the Bohemians manager, told his club's official website that the contest was up for grabs. "I know a lot of people will be saying we have to be patient, but I think we will have to take the game to them."

Celtic goal
Lithuania's FBK Kaunas also have everything to play for when they defend a 1-0 advantage at home against HB Tórshavn of the Faroe Islands. Substitute Martin Opic's late away goal last Wednesday took Kaunas one step towards a meeting with Scotland's UEFA Cup finalists Celtic FC.

Trio of blanks
Just three games drew a blank last week, although plenty of drama is expected second time around. HJK Helsinki of Finland were frustrated by a 0-0 stalemate in Northern Ireland against Glentoran FC but feel they can win through to face MTK Hungária FC while FC Irtysh Pavlodar managed a goalless draw in Cyprus against Omonia AC. The Kazakhstan champions are playing in the competition for the first time but have every chance of securing a tie against Poland's Wisla Kraków.

Slavia interest
The final fixture yet to see a goal is the meeting of the title-holders from Luxembourg and Bosnia-Herzegovina. CS Grevenmacher achieved a creditable home draw against FK Leotar seven days ago but may find it a harder proposition on the road. SK Slavia Praha of the Czech Republic await the winners.

Slender leads
Elsewhere, FC Pyunik of Armenia visit Icelandic team KR Reykjavík with a 1-0 cushion from the first leg, while Cristian Tudor's goal has given Moldovan challengers FC Sheriff Tiraspol a slender advantage for the trip to Estonia to face FC Flora.

Skonto still fighting
Finally, Maltese competitors Sliema Wanderers FC defend a 2-0 lead in Latvia against Skonto FC. Despite trailing from the first leg, Skonto coach Aleksandrs Starkovs is confident his team can advance. "It is enough for us to play close to potential to beat Sliema," he said. Sliema coach Edward Aquilina is calling the fixture a "50-50 affair", although he has achieved his first aim of not conceding a goal at home.
